Andrea Kimi Antonelli, currently leading the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, has spoken candidly about the challenges faced during his rookie season with Mercedes in 2025. The Italian driver admitted to struggling significantly during the European leg of that campaign.
Antonelli, who is in his second F1 season, revealed he felt the immense pressure of his debut year. He stated that he allowed this pressure to ‘destroy’ him during that difficult period.
The Mercedes driver expressed a feeling of letting down those who had shown faith in him. He specifically mentioned Team Principal Toto Wolff, noting Wolff was instrumental in his promotion to Formula 1.
Following this challenging phase in 2025, Antonelli engaged in a significant meeting with the Mercedes team. This discussion provided an opportunity for him to reset and regain his focus.
Wolff has maintained a direct approach in managing Antonelli’s career. Earlier in the 2026 season, Wolff publicly criticised Antonelli’s performance at Monza, describing it as ‘underwhelming’ after an error-strewn race.
Despite Antonelli’s current 50-point lead in the championship standings, Wolff has cautioned against premature title discussions. He stated that such talk is ‘not good’ for the young driver and that reliability issues could quickly alter the championship picture.
Antonelli’s 2025 rookie season saw him make his F1 debut at the Australian Grand Prix. His rapid ascent through junior categories, bypassing Formula 3 directly to Formula 2, had drawn considerable attention.
The 19-year-old has demonstrated a significant improvement in his second season. He secured his maiden F1 victory at the Chinese Grand Prix this year and has since accumulated six wins from 11 rounds.
His performance in 2026 marks a strong recovery from the mid-season slump experienced last year. Data indicates a substantial reduction in the pace gap to his teammate George Russell.
‘I let the pressure kind of destroy me as well during that period, because I felt like I was letting down so many people who had believed in me – especially Toto [Wolff], because he was the main one who took the decision,’ Antonelli stated.
Antonelli now heads into the summer break as the championship leader. The Formula 1 season will resume from August 21 to 23 with the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
