Andrea Kimi Antonelli has responded to George Russell’s recent comments regarding the 2026 Formula 1 championship battle and the internal Mercedes team dynamic. Russell previously stated that the 2026 title was ‘Antonelli’s to lose’ following a battery issue that led to his retirement at the Canadian Grand Prix earlier this season.
Russell also suggested that the current Mercedes car setup might favour Antonelli’s driving style more than his own. He indicated a potential need to adapt his approach or guide car development in a different direction to suit his requirements.
Despite these remarks, Russell recently dismissed suggestions of preferential treatment for Antonelli within Mercedes. He highlighted that the team’s 2,000 personnel are all incentivised by bonuses for winning the constructors’ championship.
Russell further clarified that there is no reason for Mercedes to back one driver over the other. He affirmed that both drivers are permitted to race, unless the team’s primary objective of maximising points is compromised.
Antonelli currently holds a comfortable lead in the world championship standings. Russell conceded that his 25-point deficit to Antonelli is a fair reflection of their performances during the first half of the season.
Russell acknowledged that Antonelli has performed better than him to this point in the year, thus deserving his championship advantage. He considered a gap between 10 and 30 points to be a fair representation.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has openly praised Antonelli’s performance, stating that the young driver ‘is in a different class’. This assessment underscores Antonelli’s strong form this season.
Former Formula 1 driver Timo Glock believes that tensions between the two Mercedes teammates are inevitable. He anticipates further clashes between Antonelli and Russell during the remainder of the current season.
The team is now preparing for the Belgian and Hungarian Grands Prix, aiming for clean races to conclude the first half of the 2026 season. Mercedes seeks to convert their car’s potential into maximum points.
