Formula 1’s decision to include the Monaco Grand Prix in the 2027 Sprint calendar has prompted warnings from prominent figures within the sport. BBC F1 correspondent Andrew Benson has highlighted the heightened probability of incidents on the demanding street circuit.

Benson expressed surprise at the calendar inclusion, citing Monaco’s inherent lack of overtaking opportunities. He underscored that the compressed Sprint format significantly increases the chance of accidents.

The core concern revolves around the reduced track time available to drivers. Under the Sprint weekend structure, teams will have only one hour of free practice before entering Sprint Qualifying.

McLaren driver Lando Norris has echoed these sentiments, stating that limited practice will compel drivers to take greater risks earlier in the weekend.

Norris explained that without ample time to build confidence and fine-tune car setups, drivers will be pushed closer to the limit prematurely. He noted that exceeding this threshold in Monaco typically results in a crash.

The Monaco circuit is renowned for its narrow confines and unforgiving barriers, offering minimal margin for error. Historically, qualifying performance has been paramount due to the scarcity of overtaking zones.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has defended the expansion of Sprint events, including Monaco, by stating they offer ‘more intensity, drama and wheel-to-wheel action’.

F1 data indicates that Sprint weekends are 12% more popular with audiences compared to traditional Grand Prix weekends. The format aims to provide two compelling qualifying sessions.

However, the compressed schedule means drivers must adapt quickly to the circuit’s unique challenges. A significant incident during the Sprint weekend could severely compromise a driver’s prospects for the main Grand Prix.
