An F1TV analyst has described Max Verstappen’s 2026 Formula 1 season as ‘era-defining’. This assessment comes as the four-time world champion navigates a challenging period under the sport’s new technical regulations. Verstappen has openly criticised the 2026 car specifications, labelling them ‘anti-racing’ and akin to ‘Formula E on steroids’.

Verstappen, who secured four consecutive titles from 2021 to 2024, currently sits sixth in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship standings. He has accumulated 163 points after 15 rounds, recording seven podium finishes but no victories prior to the recent Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.

The Red Bull driver achieved his first win of the current season at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, held on October 5, 2026. He recovered from an initial setback, having fallen behind both Mercedes drivers, Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, at the start of the race.

Conversely, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, in his second Formula 1 season, leads the 2026 Drivers’ Championship. The Mercedes driver has amassed 320 points, establishing a significant 84-point advantage over his teammate George Russell.

Antonelli made his Formula 1 debut in 2025 with Mercedes, partnering Russell after replacing Lewis Hamilton. His 2026 campaign has been marked by eight Grand Prix victories, including wins in China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco, Belgium, Italy, and Spain.

The F1TV analyst’s comments also drew a sharp comparison regarding Antonelli’s current performance. While dismissing direct comparisons between Antonelli and Verstappen as premature, the analyst suggested Antonelli is already operating at a higher level than George Russell, Lando Norris, Carlos Sainz, or Charles Leclerc have previously demonstrated.

George Russell, Antonelli’s Mercedes teammate, is currently second in the championship with 236 points. His title aspirations suffered a setback with a late retirement at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, which further extended Antonelli’s lead.

Russell had previously acknowledged that his performance earlier in the season was not strong enough to sustain a championship challenge. He has also faced reliability issues and difficulties adapting his driving style to the 2026 car regulations.

The perception of Antonelli’s superior form is underscored by instances such as the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Despite a qualifying crash that left him starting 16th, Antonelli recovered to finish fifth, conceding only 15 points to race winner Russell.

In the broader championship context, Lando Norris of McLaren holds 188 points, tied with Max Verstappen. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari is slightly ahead with 191 points. Carlos Sainz, driving for Williams, has recorded 7 points this season.

Antonelli’s contract with Mercedes extends until at least the end of the 2027 season. His current trajectory positions him as a strong contender to become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history.
