Former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers has identified a specific area of exceptional performance in the Red Bull RB22 following the Hungarian Grand Prix. While initially struggling to pinpoint the car’s strengths, Albers ultimately praised its straight-line speed.
Albers observed the RB22’s performance during the recent race weekend. He noted that the car’s speed on the straights was particularly striking.
He stated, ‘I must honestly say that they did excel in terms of power. If you saw how hard the car went on the straight sections… that was not normal!’
This assessment came despite Albers’ initial difficulty in analysing the Red Bull’s overall strength at the Hungaroring. He found the car’s pace in slow and medium-speed corners to be unremarkable.
Max Verstappen secured a second-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix. This result placed him behind McLaren’s Lando Norris.
Verstappen finished ahead of Ferrari driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli and his teammate Lewis Hamilton. This marked Verstappen’s best result of the current 2026 season.
The RB22 is powered by the Red Bull Ford DM01 power unit, signifying Red Bull’s entry as a full works engine manufacturer for 2026.
This 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid engine features a substantial electrical component. Nearly 50 percent of its total output is derived from electrical energy.
The 2026 regulations mandated significant changes, including the removal of the MGU-H. The MGU-K now delivers up to 350kW of power.
The power unit operates on 100 percent sustainable fuel, aligning with the new technical directives.
Aerodynamic regulations for 2026 introduced flat floors and active aerodynamics. This system allows for X-mode on straights and Z-mode for corners.
Red Bull has implemented an aggressive aerodynamic philosophy for the RB22. This includes compact sidepods and a distinct diffuser slot.
The RB22 underwent a comprehensive aerodynamic package revamp early in the season. Modifications to the sidepods and floor were introduced at the Suzuka round.
Despite the engine’s performance, the RB22 has demonstrated weaknesses in aerodynamic downforce. Stability in mid-corner has also been a persistent issue for the team.
Red Bull has made substantial changes to the sidepod layout across the first 11 races. These modifications aimed to improve load distribution and cornering stability.
Verstappen voiced strong criticism of the RB22’s performance during the Hungarian Grand Prix. He described the car as ‘completely ed’ over team radio.
Albers subsequently criticised Verstappen for these public remarks. He suggested the driver should defend his team more publicly.
Red Bull remains the only top team yet to secure a race victory in the 2026 season.
