Former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers has issued a direct warning to Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing, characterizing their current standing in the 2026 season as ‘a very dangerous situation’. Albers’ comments follow a series of recent Grand Prix events where Red Bull’s performance advantage has notably diminished.
Albers specifically highlighted concerns regarding Red Bull’s development trajectory under the new 2026 technical regulations. He suggested that while the team commenced the season strongly, rival constructors have achieved more significant gains in recent weeks.
This includes advancements in power unit efficiency and aerodynamic upgrades from competing teams. The former Minardi and Spyker driver identified Mercedes and Ferrari as the primary threats to Red Bull’s championship aspirations.
Both Mercedes and Ferrari have secured consistent podium finishes and race victories across the last three Grand Prix events. Albers stated in an interview earlier this week that ‘The gap is closing rapidly’.
They need to deliver a substantial step, not just incremental improvements.
He further cautioned that Red Bull ‘cannot afford to stand still’ in their development efforts. Verstappen, despite currently leading the Drivers’ Championship, has encountered tougher competition.
Several recent races have been decided by narrow margins, indicating a reduced performance buffer. Albers believes this increased pressure could lead to errors if the car’s overall performance does not improve.
‘Max is exceptional, but even he needs a car that allows him to execute without constant overdriving,’ Albers explained. This underscores the importance of car development in maintaining a competitive edge.
Paddock sources indicate that Red Bull is actively developing a significant upgrade package. This is anticipated for introduction at the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix later this season.
However, Albers questioned whether this planned upgrade would be sufficient to re-establish a comfortable lead over their accelerating rivals. He emphasized the need for a substantial performance leap.
The 2026 season introduced revised aerodynamic rules and new power unit regulations. These changes were designed to promote sustainable fuels and increase electrical power, aiming to level the competitive playing field.
This regulatory shift appears to be materializing as the season progresses, with multiple teams demonstrating strong performance. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner acknowledged the heightened competition earlier this month.
Horner stated, ‘We are in a championship fight, and we expect our rivals to push us hard. We are fully focused on maximizing our package.’ He did not directly address Albers’ specific remarks regarding a ‘dangerous situation’.
The next event on the calendar is the Hungarian Grand Prix, followed by the summer break. The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps will then follow.
