Former Formula 1 driver Christian Danner has labelled Lewis Hamilton a “diva,” asserting that the seven-time world champion will always retain this characteristic. Danner’s comments follow a contentious opening-lap incident between Hamilton and Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc at the recent Mexican Grand Prix.

The clash, which occurred on Sunday, November 1, 2026, saw Hamilton start from pole position at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Leclerc, starting third, challenged Hamilton into Turn 4.

Both Ferrari drivers ran wide and off the track during the manoeuvre. Leclerc subsequently cut Turn 5, gaining a position and taking the lead.

Hamilton rejoined the circuit correctly but lost momentum, allowing Max Verstappen to move ahead into second place. Hamilton expressed his frustration over team radio, stating he was “pushed out by my own teammate.”

Race stewards investigated the incident and issued Leclerc a five-second time penalty for gaining a lasting advantage by leaving the track. Hamilton questioned the penalty, noting he received a ten-second penalty for a similar incident in 2025.

Leclerc acknowledged the penalty was deserved but explained he had intended to return the position. However, Verstappen’s overtake on Hamilton complicated the situation. Leclerc also maintained his aggressive approach, stating, “I always attack.”

Ferrari Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur reacted strongly to the incident, accusing his drivers of “huge disrespect” for the team. Vasseur indicated he would hold discussions with both drivers regarding their actions.

Hamilton has previously called for “rules of engagement” within Ferrari after a similar high-profile skirmish with Leclerc during the Italian Grand Prix two months prior.

Danner’s assessment of Hamilton’s character is not new. In 2022, he commented on Hamilton’s “jumbo jet” ego. In late 2025, Danner urged Hamilton to “take responsibility” rather than “drowning in self-pity” during a challenging period at Ferrari.

The former F1 driver also described Hamilton as “a bit stroppy” and part of a “two-fold problem” for Ferrari in April 2025, with the car’s performance being the other issue.

The ongoing tension presents a significant management challenge for Vasseur. Nico Rosberg, the 2016 world champion, has urged Vasseur to “start to act” and implement clear racing guidelines for his drivers.

Hamilton himself noted that Ferrari has done “nothing to manage his rivalry” with Leclerc. This situation comes amidst reports from October 2026 suggesting Ferrari may be preparing a succession plan for Vasseur after the current season.

Danner referenced Niki Lauda’s management of Hamilton and Nico Rosberg during their intense rivalry at Mercedes. Lauda, as Mercedes’ non-executive chairman, was instrumental in controlling their competitive dynamic, including instances where Hamilton defied team orders.

Niki Lauda aimed to keep the rivalry under control, acknowledging that successful drivers possess a ruthless mentality.

The Ferrari team principal has led the Scuderia to eight Grand Prix victories as of the 2026 Mexican Grand Prix. However, managing two highly competitive drivers with strong personalities remains a critical task for the team’s championship aspirations.
