Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has stated that the traditional archetype of a Formula 1 champion, characterised by ruthlessness and self-interest, has concluded with Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Wolff believes Antonelli, the 2026 F1 World Champion, embodies a new standard for drivers in the sport.

Antonelli secured the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, driving for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team. At 20 years and 87 days old at the time of his victory, he became the youngest ever F1 World Champion.

This achievement surpassed the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who won his first title in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days old. Antonelli’s birth year of 2006 positions him as the first true Generation Z champion.

Wolff discussed this shift with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, asserting that the ‘win at all costs, selfish, opportunistic, ruthless’ driver model is now defunct. He views Antonelli as a champion who represents humility, integrity, loyalty, and respect.

“This notion of win at all costs, selfish, opportunistic, ruthless for your own benefit, that model of racing driver has died. We have a new champion that breaks that, represents values like humility, like integrity, loyalty, respect, being himself.”

Throughout the 2026 season, Antonelli consistently demonstrated a calm and composed approach. His demeanor was particularly noted during incidents at the Spanish and Japanese Grands Prix.

He accepted penalties without public complaint, which Wolff highlighted as evidence of his character. Antonelli secured four victories and ten podium finishes during his championship-winning campaign.

His teammate at Mercedes for the 2026 season was George Russell. Antonelli’s promotion to a full-time F1 seat for 2026 was confirmed by Mercedes in late 2025.

This followed impressive performances in junior categories, including winning the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine in 2025.

He also claimed titles in the Formula Regional Middle East Championship in 2024 and the Italian F4 Championship in 2022. His rapid progression saw him move directly from Formula Regional to Formula 2 in 2025.

Wolff suggested that Antonelli should serve as a role model for younger drivers in junior formulas. He also indicated that established F1 drivers exhibiting entitlement or frequent complaints could learn from Antonelli’s respectful conduct.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has also previously stressed the importance of drivers acting as role models and upholding the sport’s values. FIA President Ben Sulayem has consistently advocated for sportsmanship among competitors.

The Mercedes Deputy Team Principal, Bradley Lord, acknowledged Antonelli’s ability to integrate effectively with the team. Lord noted Antonelli’s unique energy and approach within the Mercedes garage.

Wolff concluded that Antonelli represents the modern Formula 1 driver, not solely due to his talent, but because of the values he embodies.
