George Russell has issued a social media statement following his failure to secure the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. His mathematical chances for a maiden title were eliminated at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday. Russell’s post addressed his season, acknowledging personal performance issues.

During the Mexico City Grand Prix, Russell started from second position on the grid. However, a deployment problem on the opening lap caused him to lose multiple places. He then made contact with Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull at Turn 6, sending Hadjar into a spin.

The Mercedes driver received a 10-second time penalty for causing the collision. Russell also reported front wing problems during the race. He ultimately finished the Grand Prix in sixth position.

His teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, secured the World Championship by finishing third in the same race. Antonelli, at 20 years and 68 days old, became the youngest F1 World Champion in history. He surpassed Sebastian Vettel’s previous record set in 2010.

Antonelli’s title marks the first for an Italian driver in 73 years, since Alberto Ascari’s championship in 1953. This is Antonelli’s second season in Formula 1. He has achieved nine wins, seven pole positions, and 16 podium finishes in 19 Grands Prix this year.

Russell entered the 2026 season as an overwhelming favourite, attributed to his consistent performance and the strength of the Mercedes package. However, he has secured only three Grand Prix victories this season. Russell currently holds 250 points, competing for second place in the championship standings against Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, and Charles Leclerc.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the team had ‘let him down’ in Mexico. Wolff also stated that the car ‘didn’t work for him this year.’ Russell did not attend post-race media duties, resulting in a €5,000 fine for Mercedes. Wolff described Russell as ‘distraught’ but understood his absence.

The Mercedes-AMG F1 W17 E Performance car was developed under significant 2026 regulation changes. It features a new hybrid power unit with a near 50:50 split between combustion and electric power. The W17 also incorporates active aerodynamics with movable front and rear wings, replacing the Drag Reduction System.

As of the Mexico City Grand Prix, the W17 has accumulated 12 wins and 24 podiums. Mercedes is currently leading the Constructors’ Championship, comfortably ahead of Ferrari. The team is expected to secure the constructors’ title in the upcoming race weekend.

Russell’s social media message conveyed his intent to finish the season strongly. He aims to ‘rediscover’ his previous form. He also expressed pride in his resilience throughout a challenging season.

This season started off exactly how I had hoped but it very quickly unravelled with tough luck and poor performances. It’s been the first proper season of my career where I’ve had more bad days than good.

Russell congratulated Antonelli on his championship victory and thanked the Mercedes team for the car and power unit. He affirmed his commitment to giving his absolute best for the remainder of this season and into the next.
