Max Verstappen faced an FIA investigation following an incident with Lewis Hamilton during sprint qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix on Friday, October 9, 2026. The Red Bull driver was alleged to have overtaken Hamilton under yellow flags. Stewards ultimately cleared Verstappen of any wrongdoing, allowing him to retain his sprint pole position.

The incident occurred in the initial phase of SQ1 after Cadillac driver Sergio Perez crashed, leaving debris on the Marina Bay street circuit. Yellow flags were deployed to manage the hazard.

Hamilton reported the event over his Ferrari team radio, stating, ‘Max overtook me under yellow flag.’ Verstappen, in turn, communicated to Red Bull that judging the yellow flag was ‘a bit tricky’ and he believed he had passed Hamilton before the yellow zone.

Following a review of various data, including telemetry and video evidence, the FIA stewards concluded that Verstappen had reacted appropriately to the yellow flag by lifting off the throttle and reducing speed. The significant speed differential between Verstappen, who was on a push lap, and Hamilton, who had slowed, led to the overlap.

Verstappen secured pole position for the sprint race, demonstrating strong pace despite the investigation. Hamilton qualified in sixth place for the upcoming sprint event.

Formula 1 analyst Peter Windsor observed Red Bull Racing’s operational challenges during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend. Windsor noted that Verstappen appeared undisturbed during sprint qualifying, despite the team encountering various problems in free practice.

Verstappen’s free practice session was significantly hampered by technical issues. He completed limited running due to persistent radio problems, which necessitated him exiting the car. Additionally, an ERS (Energy Recovery System) malfunction occurred at the conclusion of the session.

Windsor remarked on the perceived nervousness of Gianpiero Lambiase, Verstappen’s race engineer, due to these technical setbacks. However, Verstappen’s performance indicated he did not require Lambiase’s warnings, maintaining focus and pace.

This performance follows a recent upturn in Red Bull’s form. Verstappen secured his first victory of the 2026 season at the Bahrain Grand Prix, held at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, just last weekend.

Windsor has previously highlighted Red Bull’s improved car development, particularly praising the Red Bull Powertrains-Ford engine and the work of technical director Pierre Wache, suggesting a solid foundation for future seasons.
