FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has reiterated his vision for Formula 1, advocating for a return to V8 power units. He also calls for simpler, lighter cars and cheaper engines within the sport. Ben Sulayem recently defended the FIA’s handling of the current 2026 regulations, stating that teams had supported the direction of electrification.

The FIA President has been actively mapping out a return to V8 power, with a target introduction date of 2030 or 2031 if a consensus can be reached. This push is a direct response to concerns regarding the 2026 turbo-hybrid regulations.

Drivers have expressed frustration with the current 2026 rules, citing issues such as ‘lift and coast’ and ‘superclipping’ that impact their ability to attack a lap. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has publicly supported Ben Sulayem’s vision for V8s, emphasizing the role of 100% sustainable fuels.

The 2026 technical regulations introduced the ‘Nimble Car Concept’, aiming for more competitive, safer, and sustainable racing. Cars are 30kg lighter, with a target weight of 724kg plus tire mass.

Dimensions have been reduced, with the wheelbase shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm and the width cut by 100mm. Active aerodynamics have replaced the Drag Reduction System (DRS), allowing drivers to switch between two modes for energy conservation and overtaking.

The power units for the current season feature a more even 50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power. They utilize 100% sustainable fuels and boast almost 300% more battery power.

A new ‘Manual Override’ system provides an additional 0.5 megajoules of electrical energy for overtaking opportunities. Safety improvements for 2026 include revised front-impact structures and increased side-intrusion protection.

In driver market news, Lando Norris, the 2025 Formula 1 Drivers’ World Champion, extended his contract with McLaren until at least the end of 2030. This multi-year deal includes an option to commit beyond that date.

Fernando Alonso also confirmed his future, signing an extension with Aston Martin through 2027. Lewis Hamilton praised Alonso’s talent following the announcement of his continued presence in the sport.

Hamilton himself is contracted with Ferrari until at least the end of the 2027 season, having signed a multi-year deal. His base salary at Ferrari is reported to be $60 million per year.

Earlier this season, the Chinese Grand Prix was held on March 15, 2026, at the Shanghai International Circuit. It marked the second round of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship and featured a sprint format.

The 2026 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is scheduled to conclude the season from December 4-6 at the Yas Marina Circuit. FIA President Ben Sulayem has confirmed the event will proceed as planned, despite ongoing regional tensions.
