Red Bull Racing is currently evaluating a significant power unit issue that could result in a grid penalty for Max Verstappen later this season. The problem emerged during qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where Verstappen experienced unexpected engine trouble.

Verstappen, a four-time F1 champion, openly stated his expectation of a grid penalty at some point. He reported a deployment issue with his power unit, which worsened through qualifying sessions in Baku.

Despite the issues, Verstappen salvaged a second-place finish at the Baku City Circuit. Red Bull avoided an immediate penalty by utilising components already available within his power unit allocation.

Team principal Laurent Mekies has indicated that the team is awaiting a full technical analysis of the engine removed from Verstappen’s car. The decision on a potential penalty hinges on whether that unit can be reused.

Mekies stated that it is not yet clear if a penalty will be necessary, or when it might be taken. Red Bull has options, including waiting until a penalty is strictly unavoidable or strategically choosing a race to take the hit.

The engine concerns add to a challenging 2026 season for Red Bull. The team’s RB22 car has displayed limitations, including a narrow operating window and persistent balance problems.

During the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, team orders also became a point of discussion involving Verstappen and teammate Isack Hadjar. Hadjar, on soft tyres, showed strong pace behind Verstappen, who was on mediums.

Despite Hadjar’s requests to attack Oscar Piastri ahead, Red Bull instructed him to hold station behind Verstappen. Mekies later explained this decision was made to optimise the team’s chances, anticipating a safety car.

Hadjar, who recently had his Red Bull contract renewed for the 2027 season, ultimately secured a podium finish in Baku, contributing to a double podium for the team.

Verstappen himself has noted that Red Bull still lacks outright pace compared to rivals Mercedes and McLaren this season. Reliability issues have also been a recurring concern for the team.

The ongoing technical analysis and the potential for a grid penalty represent a critical challenge for Red Bull as the 2026 Formula 1 season progresses towards its conclusion.
