Lando Norris demonstrated significant performance at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix held at the new Madring circuit, securing pole position before an ill-timed Virtual Safety Car (VSC) deployment impacted his race outcome. The McLaren driver ultimately finished third, despite leading comfortably for a period.

Former Formula 1 driver Robert Doornbos observed a notable shift in Norris’s approach during the current 2026 season. Doornbos stated that Norris has matured, exhibiting a greater capacity to perform under intense pressure.

This contrasts with Doornbos’s assessment of Norris’s 2025 championship campaign, where he felt the British driver did not consistently perform at a world champion level when under pressure, despite ultimately securing the title.

Norris, the reigning 2025 FIA Formula 1 World Drivers’ Champion, secured his first world title last year with McLaren, narrowly defeating Max Verstappen by two points in Abu Dhabi.

At the Madring circuit, Norris claimed pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix with a lap time of 1:31.824. This effort was just 0.011 seconds faster than Kimi Antonelli, marking Norris’s 19th career pole and his third of the 2026 season.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella described Norris’s qualifying lap as a ‘masterpiece,’ noting its exceptional nature despite a slide in the final corner that cost over 0.3 seconds.

The Madring, officially known as Circuito de Madring, is a new hybrid street circuit in Madrid, Spain. It commenced hosting the Spanish Grand Prix in 2026, replacing the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

The 5.414-kilometre circuit features 22 turns and includes a prominent banked corner named La Monumental. Construction of the circuit, which cost €83.2 million, was completed in August 2026.

During the race on September 13, Norris was leading when a Virtual Safety Car was deployed following an incident involving Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin at Turn 20.

Norris had already passed the pit lane entry when the VSC was activated, preventing him from pitting under the reduced speed conditions. This allowed rivals Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen to make advantageous pit stops.

The McLaren driver was forced to complete another lap before pitting, by which time the VSC period had concluded. A subsequent slow pit stop further compounded his disadvantage, dropping him to fifth position.

Kimi Antonelli ultimately won the Spanish Grand Prix, with Max Verstappen finishing second. Norris recovered to secure the final podium position in third.

Both Antonelli and Verstappen acknowledged that Norris had deserved the victory, given his performance prior to the VSC incident.

The circumstances surrounding the VSC deployment prompted debate regarding the fairness of current regulations, with Norris advocating for potential rule adjustments.

Doornbos highlighted Norris’s consistent performance across varied circuits this season, including Zandvoort, Monza, and Madring, as evidence of his increased confidence.

The former driver also noted a widening performance gap between Norris and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, with Piastri qualifying almost half a second slower at Madring and finishing eighth in the race.

McLaren, after securing both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles in 2025, experienced a challenging start to the 2026 season.

Initial development issues with the 2026 regulations led to a performance deficit compared to competitors like Mercedes.

However, the team introduced a significant aerodynamic upgrade package at the Hungarian Grand Prix, which has since improved their competitiveness, leading to Norris’s back-to-back victories at Hungary and Zandvoort earlier in the season.
