Aston Martin, powered by Honda for the 2026 Formula 1 season, has encountered significant performance challenges. The team has struggled to consistently score points, falling short of pre-season expectations during the current campaign.

Honda’s new 2026 power unit, developed under revised regulations, has reportedly faced issues. These problems are primarily linked to energy deployment and battery management, particularly within the electrical recovery system (ERS).

The 2026 regulations mandate a 50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power. This shift has presented a steep learning curve for the new Aston Martin-Honda partnership, contributing to a noticeable power deficit on straights.

Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack has acknowledged the complexity of the new power unit regulations. He has highlighted the need for collaborative efforts within the sport to ensure competitive parity, especially for new engine partnerships.

However, the prospect of rival teams offering technical assistance to Honda has met with resistance. Christian Horner, Red Bull team principal, has voiced reservations regarding such support.

Horner reportedly stated that teams invest heavily in their own research and development. Sharing critical intellectual property would undermine competitive integrity, according to his comments.

The FIA maintains that direct technical assistance between competing power unit manufacturers is generally not permitted. This stance applies outside of specific regulatory frameworks or safety concerns.

The onus remains on each manufacturer to develop a competitive package independently. This position reinforces the self-reliance expected within Formula 1.

Honda’s previous partnership with Red Bull Racing resulted in multiple drivers’ and constructors’ championships with Max Verstappen. This period showcased their capability to produce a dominant power unit under a different regulatory cycle.

As of September 2026, Aston Martin occupies seventh position in the Constructors’ Championship. This represents a significant decline from their initial mid-field aspirations for the season.

Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have both experienced difficulties with the car’s overall balance. The power unit’s inconsistent delivery has further complicated their performance on track.
