Former Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg has reflected on the intense pressure exerted by Max Verstappen during their on-track battles. Rosberg, now an F1 pundit, highlighted Verstappen’s aggressive driving style as a significant factor in their rivalry. His comments provide context to the challenge Verstappen continues to represent in the sport.

Rosberg previously labelled Verstappen as his ‘most annoying’ rival, citing the increased risk of a non-finish (DNF) when competing against the Dutchman. He recalled that during his 2016 championship season, Verstappen consistently challenged him in the final races.

The 2016 champion specifically mentioned Verstappen passing him in three of the last four races of that season. A notable incident included a decisive overtake at the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix.

This reflection on past encounters comes as Verstappen navigates a challenging 2026 Formula 1 season. The Red Bull driver currently sits sixth in the standings with 145 points.

Verstappen trails championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 147 points. He has also endured a 14-race winless streak during the current campaign.

His best results this season have been second-place finishes at the Austrian, Hungarian, and Spanish Grands Prix.

Red Bull’s RB22 car has faced persistent issues, including what Verstappen describes as ‘car degradation’. This problem affects overall performance and aerodynamics, distinct from tyre wear.

Laurent Mekies, Red Bull’s Team Principal, confirmed on September 20, 2026, that these degradation issues will not be fully resolved within the current season.

Verstappen has also indicated that he has been forced to limit his aggression over kerbs due to concerns about component strength on the rear of the car.

Rosberg has maintained an active role as an F1 analyst this year. In April 2026, he defended the controversial new 2026 F1 regulations, which Verstappen had criticised as ‘anti-racing’.

More recently, on September 21, 2026, Rosberg questioned Liam Lawson’s suitability for a Red Bull seat. He stated that the team seeks drivers of the calibre of Verstappen or Sebastian Vettel.

Rosberg’s insights underscore that despite Red Bull’s current performance struggles, Verstappen’s inherent talent and aggressive approach continue to define his presence on the grid.
