Former Formula 1 driver Marc Surer has expressed concern regarding Max Verstappen’s current performance capabilities within the 2026 Formula 1 season. Surer believes Verstappen is no longer able to fully utilise his skills, a sentiment emerging as Red Bull Racing navigates a challenging period.

Red Bull has faced significant difficulties during the current season, failing to secure a top-five finish in the initial half of the year. The team currently sits sixth in the constructors’ championship standings.

These struggles coincide with Red Bull’s transition to its first in-house power unit project, Red Bull Ford Powertrains, for the 2026 season. This marks a substantial shift for the team, which previously relied on external engine suppliers.

The new power unit, officially named DM01 in honour of the late Dietrich Mateschitz, represents a collaboration with Ford Motor Company. It was unveiled in January 2026, signifying a new era for the Milton Keynes outfit.

Despite the team’s performance challenges, Max Verstappen committed his long-term future to Red Bull. He signed a contract extension until the end of the 2030 season on August 20, 2026, ending widespread speculation about his future.

Verstappen had previously indicated he seriously considered leaving Formula 1 due to frustrations with the 2026 car regulations, which place a greater emphasis on electrical power. He stated he was closer to retiring than changing teams.

Earlier in the season, on April 30, 2026, Marc Surer had advised Verstappen against a potential move to McLaren. He questioned the rationale of joining a customer team, even amidst McLaren’s recent success.

Surer also emphasised the importance of loyalty, suggesting Verstappen should remain with Red Bull during difficult periods. This advice came as Red Bull prepared to introduce significant updates at the Miami Grand Prix.

The 2026 regulations introduced substantial changes, including new hybrid power units with increased electrical output and the use of 100% sustainable fuels. Red Bull’s RB22 car was designed from the ground up for these new rules.

Verstappen has been deeply involved in the development of the Red Bull Ford Powertrains engine, visiting Ford’s facilities multiple times to shape the project. This engagement signals his confidence in the team’s long-term vision.

The current performance struggles have led to other notable predictions. Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner, for instance, has suggested that Max Verstappen could conclude the 2026 season without a single Grand Prix victory.
