Lando Norris voiced strong criticism regarding the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) regulations following the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring circuit. The McLaren driver finished third in the race, having started from pole position and led comfortably before the VSC deployment.

The VSC was deployed on lap 14 after Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin retired from the race. Norris had already passed the pit entry when the VSC was announced, preventing him from making an immediate pit stop under reduced speed conditions.

This timing allowed several competitors behind him, including eventual winner Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen, to pit and gain a significant advantage. Norris was forced to complete another lap before pitting, by which time the VSC period had ended, costing him approximately 20 seconds of race time.

Norris stated that the rule ‘shouldn’t define a race’ and expressed frustration over the circumstances. He highlighted that drivers have previously discussed this scenario in briefings, suggesting that the VSC should remain active for at least one full lap to ensure fairness for all competitors.

The incident at Madring was compounded by a slow pit stop for Norris during the race, which lasted seven seconds. McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella acknowledged the slow stop but maintained that the VSC timing and the circuit’s overtaking difficulties were the primary factors in Norris missing the win.

McLaren’s pit stop performance has been a recurring concern throughout the 2026 season. The team has recorded an average pit stop time of 3.88 seconds over the last six Grands Prix, which is notably slower than leading rivals such as Mercedes, who average 2.56 seconds.

This pattern of slower pit stops has been identified as a potential threat to Norris’s 2026 championship campaign. Improving operational efficiency in the pit lane is crucial for McLaren to consistently convert strong qualifying performances into race victories.

Separately, during qualifying for the same Spanish Grand Prix, McLaren received a €900 fine from the FIA stewards. This penalty was issued after Norris was recorded travelling at 88.5 km/h in the pit lane, exceeding the mandated 80 km/h speed limit by 8.5 km/h.

The pit lane speeding infringement resulted solely in a financial penalty for the team and did not incur any grid penalties or sporting sanctions for Norris.

This season has seen other pit lane incidents draw scrutiny. At the Belgian Grand Prix, Ferrari faced an FIA investigation following an unsafe release involving Lewis Hamilton, where a mechanic was struck. Williams also received a €5,000 fine at the Monaco Grand Prix after a pit lane manoeuvre by Alex Albon nearly caused injury to a Racing Bulls mechanic.
