Max Verstappen secured a second-place finish at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid. The Red Bull driver concluded the race behind Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli. Verstappen described this result as an ‘incredible’ achievement, given the competitive circumstances.

The four-time world champion acknowledged that McLaren’s Lando Norris demonstrated significantly stronger race pace throughout the event. Despite this, Verstappen managed to hold off Norris in the closing stages of the race.

Red Bull’s strategy capitalised on the timing of a Virtual Safety Car period. This allowed Verstappen to gain track position, which proved crucial on the challenging Madring circuit.

Norris, who started from pole position, experienced misfortune with the Virtual Safety Car timing and a slow pit stop. He ultimately finished in third place, behind Verstappen.

The Madring circuit, hosting its first Formula 1 Grand Prix, presented limited overtaking opportunities. Verstappen noted that positioning the car centrally made it difficult for rivals to pass.

Antonelli’s victory marked his eighth of the 2026 season, extending his lead in the Drivers’ Championship. Verstappen currently sits sixth in the standings, 147 points adrift.

Despite Mercedes leading the championship, the FIA declared Red Bull Powertrains’ internal combustion engine as the strongest in June 2026. This assessment highlights the varying strengths across power unit components.

McLaren’s MCL40, driven by Norris and Oscar Piastri, has secured seven Grand Prix podiums this season. The team has shown consistent improvement after a challenging start to the 2026 campaign.

The Spanish Grand Prix podium consisted of Kimi Antonelli, Max Verstappen, and Lando Norris. This result underscores the intense competition at the forefront of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
