Alexander Wurz has commended Max Verstappen for his profound understanding of the current Red Bull car’s inherent limitations. The former Formula 1 driver and Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) chairman highlighted Verstappen’s ability to extract maximum performance despite these constraints during the ongoing 2026 season.

Wurz’s remarks underscore Verstappen’s mature approach to the team’s development efforts. He specifically noted Verstappen’s comprehensive grasp of how a circuit feels from the cockpit and the impact of minor track alterations.

The 2026 Formula 1 season has presented Red Bull Racing with significant challenges. Their RB22 chassis has struggled with drivability and speed, failing to match its predecessor.

Technical Director Pierre Waché confirmed that the RB22 faced core limitations, including entry instability, mid-corner understeer, and an overall downforce deficit. These issues made driving the car particularly difficult for both Verstappen and teammate Isack Hadjar.

Early mechanical glitches also contributed to poor driver feedback through the steering wheel. Red Bull introduced targeted fixes for these issues before the summer break.

The RB22’s performance deficit also stems from structural and aerodynamic inefficiencies. Reports indicated the car was running several kilograms above the FIA minimum weight limit, costing valuable tenths per lap.

Beyond weight concerns, the RB22 has struggled with aerodynamic consistency and peak downforce levels. This has been particularly evident in medium and high-speed corners, impacting driver confidence.

Wurz also pinpointed Red Bull’s energy management around the Suzuka circuit as a specific weakness compared to rivals like Mercedes and Ferrari. This is a vital component of the new 2026 regulations.

The 2026 regulations introduced significant changes to aerodynamics and engines, with a near 50-50 split between electric and internal combustion power. Verstappen has been a vocal critic of these new rules, citing increased complexity.

Despite the difficulties, a major upgrade package introduced at the Austrian Grand Prix helped stabilize the RB22’s performance. This led to Verstappen securing four podium finishes in the first half of the season.

Red Bull is reportedly studying Ferrari’s SF-26 rear-end concept as part of ongoing development. This aims to unlock gains in rear-end stability and improve weight distribution.

Wurz has expressed his full support for Verstappen’s criticisms of the new regulations. He believes the concerns raised by drivers regarding the complexity and energy management focus should be taken seriously.
