Former Formula 1 driver Nicholas Latifi has recently offered further insight into his pivotal crash at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The incident significantly influenced the outcome of that year’s Drivers’ Championship. Latifi, who departed Formula 1 at the close of the 2022 season, has since pursued an MBA and engaged in other ventures outside motorsport.
The 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix served as the final and decisive race of the season, with Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton entering the event level on points. Hamilton had maintained a lead for the majority of the race at the Yas Marina Circuit.
Latifi’s crash occurred on lap 50 while battling for position, bringing out the safety car. This intervention provided Red Bull Racing with an opportunity to pit Verstappen for fresh soft tyres. Hamilton, conversely, remained on older hard compound tyres.
The subsequent handling of the safety car restart by then-Race Director Michael Masi proved highly controversial. Masi’s decision to allow only a select number of lapped cars to unlap themselves positioned Verstappen directly behind Hamilton for a final lap shootout.
Verstappen then overtook Hamilton on the concluding lap to secure his maiden Formula 1 World Championship. The sequence of events led to widespread debate regarding the application of sporting regulations.
Latifi has reportedly attributed the cause of his crash to ‘dirt on his tyres’ in a recent interview, offering his perspective on the incident that reshaped the championship. This explanation provides a direct reflection on the circumstances of the event.
In the immediate aftermath of the 2021 race, Latifi faced substantial online abuse and death threats. He subsequently issued a statement and temporarily withdrew from social media platforms due to the severity of the backlash.
Williams team principal Jost Capito noted in September 2022 that the repercussions of the Abu Dhabi crash had impacted Latifi’s driving performance during his final season in Formula 1.
Latifi has since graduated from London Business School, a milestone achieved earlier this year. He was also observed at the British Grand Prix in July 2026, participating in an event for his tequila brand, Leve.
While Latifi has not ruled out a return to racing in other categories, his current focus remains outside the Formula 1 paddock. His recent comments underscore the lasting impact of the 2021 season finale.
