Lewis Hamilton has conceded his 2026 Formula 1 World Championship aspirations following his retirement from the Spanish Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver stated that Kimi Antonelli and Mercedes are now unstoppable in their pursuit of the title.
Hamilton’s race at the newly inaugurated Madring circuit in Madrid concluded prematurely on lap six due to a brake failure. This incident marked his first non-finish of the current season.
Prior to this event, Hamilton was the only driver to have completed every lap of the 2026 campaign. His retirement ended this consistent run.
Kimi Antonelli secured victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, his eighth win of the 2026 season. This result further extended his lead in the drivers’ standings.
Speaking to Sky F1 after his retirement, Hamilton acknowledged the performance of his former team.
‘There’s no stopping him and Mercedes this year. They’ve done a phenomenal job and they deserve it.’
Antonelli now holds a 101-point advantage over Hamilton in the championship standings. The Mercedes driver leads his teammate George Russell by 81 points.
The Spanish Grand Prix, held on September 13, 2026, was the debut event for the Madring circuit. This hybrid street circuit is located around the IFEMA Exhibition Centre in Madrid.
Mercedes has demonstrated significant performance throughout the 2026 season, securing ten victories from the fourteen rounds contested so far.
The race saw Lando Norris start from pole position, but a Virtual Safety Car period proved detrimental to his strategy. The VSC was deployed after Lance Stroll crashed due to brake issues.
Antonelli capitalised on the VSC timing, pitting under the neutralised conditions and gaining track position. Max Verstappen finished second, with Norris taking third place.
Antonelli, aged 20, replaced Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025. He has quickly established himself, becoming the youngest polesitter in China and the youngest World Drivers’ Championship leader in Japan this season.
His aggressive driving style is credited with extracting maximum performance from the Mercedes W17 car.
