Andrea Kimi Antonelli, currently leading the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship, has drawn significant remarks from fellow competitors. Max Verstappen and Lando Norris have described Antonelli’s performance this season as ‘frightening’.

These comments followed the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, held today, September 13, 2026. Antonelli secured another victory at the event, further extending his championship lead.

Verstappen, who finished second in Madrid, expressed his astonishment regarding Antonelli’s pace. He also noted a surprising team instruction during the race to yield a position to Lewis Hamilton.

Norris, who completed the podium in third, echoed Verstappen’s sentiments. He admitted to being ‘so confused’ by the incident involving Verstappen and Hamilton during the Spanish Grand Prix.

Antonelli’s victory in Madrid marks his eighth win in 14 races this season. This consistent performance has given him an 81-point advantage over his Mercedes teammate George Russell.

The Italian driver made his Formula 1 debut with Mercedes in 2025 at 18 years old. He quickly established himself, securing three podium finishes and 150 points in his rookie season.

Antonelli joined the Mercedes Junior Programme in April 2019. His junior career included multiple titles in karting, Formula 4, and Formula Regional championships.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has consistently praised Antonelli’s development. The team has indicated a desire to maintain its current driver lineup of Antonelli and Russell for the 2027 season.
