George Russell secured the fastest time in the opening free practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring circuit, leading a Mercedes 1-2. Russell topped the timesheet by 0.286 seconds ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli. Charles Leclerc finished third for Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton fourth.

The new 22-corner Madring circuit, featuring the banked La Monumental and several blind apexes, presented immediate challenges. Track temperatures reached 48°C, contributing to a slippery surface. This ‘green’ track condition, lacking rubber, typically results in low initial grip.

Track evolution was a significant factor throughout the session, with lap times improving consistently as more rubber was laid down. Drivers navigated the circuit’s nuances, leading to multiple incidents and lap time deletions.

Eleven drivers had lap times deleted for exceeding track limits at various points, including Turn 15. The FIA strictly enforces these limits, with all four wheels over the white line resulting in invalidation.

Mercedes demonstrated strong performance on the soft Pirelli tyres, turning the tables on Ferrari, who had shown an advantage on the medium compound. Soft tyres offer maximum grip but are prone to overheating on hot, abrasive new surfaces.

Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc struggled to complete clean laps on the soft compound, experiencing lock-ups and kerb strikes. This difficulty is common on low-grip tracks where optimal soft tyre performance is hard to extract.

Arvid Lindblad of Racing Bulls expressed frustration with Hamilton and Antonelli, accusing them of blocking his flying lap. Lindblad stated, ‘These same two guys, man! I don’t know what they’re doing. They’re just stupid, right in the fast corner! It’s actually very dangerous, it’s been twice now.’

Nico Hulkenberg also voiced displeasure with Hamilton at the final corner, describing the Ferrari driver’s positioning as ‘nasty’ to Audi. Impeding another driver in practice can lead to complaints and potential steward investigations.

Hamilton and Carlos Sainz had a close call through La Monumental, with Hamilton allowing Sainz past but providing insufficient room. Such incidents highlight the spatial awareness challenges on unfamiliar layouts.

Technical issues affected several teams. Sergio Perez returned to the pits for a new steering wheel after his installation lap. Power steering problems can stem from hydraulic or electrical failures, compromising control.

Yuki Tsunoda reported a power steering issue to Racing Bulls, stating, ‘I have an issue with this power steering, nearly crashed into the…’ Such malfunctions can significantly impact safety and force a pit return.

Oscar Piastri of McLaren reported ‘something hanging’ around his feet in the cockpit, prompting a pit stop and investigation into his MCL40’s footwell. Loose components in the cockpit pose a distraction and safety risk.

The session concluded with Russell leading the times, followed by Antonelli and Leclerc. The top 22 drivers were separated by seven seconds, with Valtteri Bottas in P22.
