Two-time Formula 1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi has drawn comparisons between Max Verstappen’s driving style and that of the late Ayrton Senna. Fittipaldi, now 79, has consistently highlighted Verstappen’s exceptional ability to extract maximum performance from his Red Bull car.
Fittipaldi noted that Verstappen demonstrates an ‘incredible’ level of driving, often appearing to carry the Red Bull car on his shoulders. He specifically referenced Verstappen’s performance in the 2025 Brazilian Grand Prix as an example of this dominance.
The Brazilian legend stated that Verstappen utilises 100 percent of the car’s potential at all times. This involves consistently operating on the edge of the car’s balance, maximising grip in all phases of a corner, including braking, turning, and exits.
Fittipaldi observed that Verstappen effectively uses all four wheels, maintaining perfect balance. He described Verstappen’s technique as driving ‘very cleanly and very fast,’ often making high speeds appear effortless.
Despite the parallels, Fittipaldi also identified distinctions between the two drivers’ approaches. He explained that Senna’s style was more aggressive, involving greater car movement on track.
Verstappen, in contrast, enters corners with a balanced approach, utilising both front and rear axles optimally. Fittipaldi attributed some of these stylistic differences to the significant evolution of Formula 1 car technology and downforce levels across eras.
Other figures within the sport have echoed similar sentiments. Rookie Gabriel Bortoleto, for instance, has placed Verstappen among the sport’s greatest drivers, alongside Senna, Lewis Hamilton, and Michael Schumacher.
Bortoleto highlighted Verstappen’s unique driving style and his near-perfect execution during qualifying laps. This ongoing discussion underscores the high regard for Verstappen’s current capabilities in the 2026 season.
‘I think Max is on the level of driving now, incredible,’ Fittipaldi said. ‘He carries, now the Red Bull car on his back. He’s not driving. He’s carrying the car.’
The comparison to Senna often revolves around an uncompromising driving style and a relentless pursuit of performance. This aligns with the perception of Verstappen’s on-track presence, where competitors often yield to his assertive manoeuvres.
