Recent reports have highlighted internal pressures within Ferrari, coinciding with ongoing discussions surrounding Lewis Hamilton’s future in Formula 1. The seven-time world champion is currently in his second season with the Scuderia.
Hamilton’s 2026 campaign has marked a significant upturn in performance compared to his debut year at Maranello. He secured his first victory for Ferrari at the Barcelona Grand Prix earlier this season.
Further podium finishes in China, Canada, Monaco, and Britain underscore his improved form. This resurgence has led to reports of an impending contract extension with Ferrari.
Hamilton’s initial agreement with Ferrari covered the 2025 and 2026 seasons, with an option for 2027. Recent claims suggest he is close to activating this option, potentially extending his stay through 2028.
Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur previously stated in July 2026 that contract discussions were not a priority. However, Hamilton has expressed his contentment at Ferrari, indicating a desire for a long-term commitment.
Despite Hamilton’s positive outlook, the team faced challenges at the recent Italian Grand Prix. Reports indicated a ‘humiliating’ performance for Ferrari, impacting Hamilton’s title aspirations.
This event also saw Hamilton reportedly voice frustration regarding Charles Leclerc’s actions during the race. Such incidents contribute to the perception of internal pressure within the team.
Concurrently, speculation linking Hamilton to a return to Mercedes for the 2027 season has been circulating. However, Mercedes has provided clear statements regarding its future driver lineup.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed in June 2026 that the team is committed to its current driver pairing. He explicitly stated no desire to alter the lineup for the 2027 season.
George Russell, one of Mercedes’ current drivers, also affirmed his position for 2027. Russell stated he holds a multi-year deal and will ‘100 per cent’ remain with the team.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli is expected to continue alongside Russell, forming Mercedes’ driver pairing for the upcoming regulatory era. Wolff expressed satisfaction with both drivers.
Therefore, reports suggesting Hamilton as a potential option for Mercedes in 2027 are not supported by the team’s official stance or Hamilton’s own public comments about his Ferrari future.
