Max Verstappen has confirmed he has deliberately eased off during races this season due to persistent technical problems with Red Bull’s RB22. The four-time world champion stated that these issues have reached a point where he avoids unnecessary risks when competing for minor positions.

The RB22 has been a source of frustration for Red Bull throughout the 2026 Formula 1 season. Technical Director Pierre Waché identified core limitations including entry instability, mid-corner understeer, and an overall downforce deficit.

Verstappen has been vocal about the car’s handling difficulties, particularly concerning balance issues during corner entry and exit. Early mechanical glitches also prevented drivers from receiving clear steering feedback.

The Dutchman revealed that he has consciously held back on multiple occasions this year. He explained that when racing for positions like seventh, he is unwilling to push the car to its absolute limit if something might go wrong.

This cautious approach stems from recurring reliability concerns and handling problems that have undermined flashes of pace. Verstappen noted that the constant setbacks have altered his risk assessment.

Red Bull’s struggles are not solely power unit related, but also involve chassis and suspension issues. These mechanical problems contribute to significant tyre degradation and balance inconsistencies across all cornering phases.

The team introduced a major development package at the Austrian Grand Prix, which helped stabilise performance. Verstappen secured a second-place finish there, adding to his four podiums by the summer break.

Despite these upgrades, problems persist. Verstappen reported a recurring rear axle issue during Italian Grand Prix qualifying on September 5, 2026. He stated this problem has affected the team for years.

This specific component issue, located at the rear of the car, has been a long-standing challenge for Red Bull. Verstappen indicated that the team has been unable to fully resolve it despite ongoing efforts.

The 2026 season began with Red Bull struggling for pace and reliability, at one point lying sixth in the Constructors’ Standings. They have since climbed to fourth with 177 points by the mid-season review.

Verstappen is currently P6 in the Drivers’ Standings with 109 points. Teammate Isack Hadjar is P8, contributing to the team’s improved position after a difficult start.

Red Bull’s performance has been inconsistent, with good weekends followed by various problems. Verstappen noted an upward trend in recent weeks, with the team making slight improvements.

However, the situation remains challenging. Verstappen finished sixth at the Italian Grand Prix, describing the race as ‘absolutely crap’ due to car performance and strategy issues.

He emphasised the need for Red Bull to implement changes, warning that without adjustments, the remainder of the season could continue to be difficult.
