Formula 1 analyst Peter Windsor has highlighted a significant radio exchange between Max Verstappen and his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase during the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix. The communication concerned a strategic tyre decision made by Red Bull Racing amidst a challenging race for the team. Windsor described the interaction as a pivotal moment in Verstappen’s performance.
During the Hungarian Grand Prix, Verstappen expressed considerable frustration with the handling of his Red Bull car. Despite these difficulties, the team opted for a strategic gamble, deciding to switch Verstappen to soft tyres in the latter stages of the race. This decision was communicated over team radio.
Verstappen questioned the viability of completing the remaining 28 laps on the soft compound. Lambiase’s response, a direct ‘Yes, there is,’ was noted by Windsor as a brilliant motivational tactic. This exchange, which was not broadcast, became one of Windsor’s standout moments of the weekend.
Windsor praised Verstappen’s adaptability and Red Bull’s strategic approach, stating that the driver consistently adjusted his style to maximise the car’s potential. He observed that Lambiase’s concise reply acted as a strong incentive for Verstappen, likening it to ‘waving a red rag in front of a bull.’
The 2026 Formula 1 season has presented Red Bull and Verstappen with considerable challenges. Verstappen, a four-time world champion, currently sits seventh in the drivers’ championship, 113 points behind Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli as of July 20, 2026. Red Bull has frequently operated as the fourth-fastest car on the grid this year.
Red Bull’s development strategy for 2026 has focused on a single technical upgrade aimed at refining aerodynamic efficiency. The team’s development rate is expected to slow following the summer break, with resources increasingly directed towards the 2027 regulatory changes.
Gianpiero Lambiase’s role within Red Bull Racing has evolved significantly. He was promoted to Head of Racing at the beginning of the 2025 season, while simultaneously retaining his responsibilities as Max Verstappen’s race engineer.
However, Lambiase’s long-term future with Red Bull has been clarified. It was announced on April 9, 2026, that he will depart the team at the conclusion of his contract at the end of 2027. Lambiase is set to join McLaren as Chief Racing Officer no later than 2028.
Red Bull has already moved to secure Lambiase’s successor in the Head of Racing role, appointing Tom McCullough from Aston Martin. McCullough is scheduled to commence his duties at Milton Keynes in early 2027.
