Charles Leclerc has confirmed that a departure from Ferrari was considered before he committed to a new multi-year contract with the Scuderia. The Monegasque driver’s future was subject to significant speculation earlier this year.
Leclerc ultimately signed an extended deal with Ferrari on June 3, 2026, just prior to his home Grand Prix in Monaco. This agreement secures his position with the team for the coming seasons.
Reports indicated that Leclerc’s manager, Nicolas Todt, engaged in exploratory discussions with other Formula 1 teams. McLaren, Aston Martin, and Mercedes were among the outfits reportedly contacted.
The period of these discussions coincided with Ferrari’s performance challenges and anticipation surrounding the new technical regulations for the 2026 season. Leclerc had expressed a desire for a championship-contending car.
Despite the external interest, Leclerc consistently reiterated his trust in Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur. He publicly stated his belief in the team’s long-term project and his ambition to win a world championship with Ferrari.
Leclerc has been with Ferrari since 2019, having progressed through their driver academy. He currently partners Lewis Hamilton, who joined the team for the 2025 season.
During the current 2026 season, Leclerc has secured a victory at the British Grand Prix. He is presently positioned third in the Drivers’ Standings after five rounds, ahead of his teammate Hamilton.
Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur has previously commented on Leclerc’s development within the team. Vasseur highlighted Leclerc’s growth into one of Formula 1’s strongest drivers and his deep connection to Ferrari’s values.
The exact duration of Leclerc’s new contract was not fully disclosed by Ferrari. However, various sources suggest the agreement extends until at least the end of the 2028 season, with some reports indicating a term until 2029.
