Jan Lammers, the Dutch Grand Prix sporting director, has drawn a comparison between Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen. Lammers specifically highlighted Antonelli’s composed demeanor during the current Formula 1 season.
In his column for De Telegraaf, Lammers stated that Antonelli appears ‘completely in control.’ This trait, according to Lammers, is also evident in Verstappen’s approach to racing.
The former Formula 1 driver has known Antonelli since his karting career. Lammers noted similarities in the young Italian’s attitude, honesty, and calmness.
Lammers further emphasized Antonelli’s ‘purity,’ a characteristic he also attributes to Verstappen’s personality. This combination of purity and control makes the comparison particularly interesting.
Lammers expressed no surprise regarding Antonelli’s strong performance during the ongoing 2026 Formula 1 season. Antonelli has made a significant impression this year.
This observation comes as Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing navigate a challenging 2026 season. Verstappen recently crashed out on the opening lap of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort.
The Red Bull RB22, powered by a new Red Bull Ford unit, has proven difficult to manage. Red Bull acknowledged a ‘step back’ in performance at the Zandvoort event.
Laurent Mekies, Red Bull team principal, admitted the team had ‘nowhere to hide’ after the disappointing Dutch Grand Prix. He vowed to investigate the RB22’s dip in form.
Red Bull’s technical director, Pierre Waché, has stated the team’s objective is to transform the RB22 into a winning car this year. This goal remains despite a tough start to the season.
Verstappen himself secured a second-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix earlier this season. He described the result as ‘incredible’ after what he called ‘one of the hardest races’ of 2026.
Lammers has previously commented on Verstappen’s consistent ability to extract maximum performance from his car. He noted this even in situations where the vehicle presented difficulties.
‘Kimi seems completely in control,’ Lammers stated, drawing a parallel to Verstappen’s mental strength.
Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull is confirmed through the 2026 season. A performance clause that could have allowed him to become a free agent for 2026 is no longer active.
The 2026 Formula 1 regulations introduced significant changes to aerodynamics and engines. The RB22 features substantial modifications from its predecessor, the RB21.
The RB22 is the first Red Bull car since 2018 not to use a Honda power unit. Honda moved to Aston Martin as its works engine partner for the 2026 season.
