David Coulthard sees no scenario in which Lando Norris would leave McLaren. The former McLaren driver states the team has achieved its ultimate objective by becoming a championship-winning force, solidifying the partnership for the long term.
Norris recently signed a significant contract extension, committing his future to the Woking-based team until at least the end of the 2030 season. This agreement followed his maiden World Championship victory in 2025, where he secured the title for McLaren.
The partnership between Norris and McLaren has been a lengthy one. The British driver joined the team’s junior program in 2017 before making his Formula 1 debut in 2019. He has since become the team’s most experienced driver, surpassing Coulthard’s record of 150 starts.
Coulthard’s comments reflect the successful culmination of McLaren’s rebuilding phase. Norris was integral to this process, which saw the team progress from the midfield to securing back-to-back Constructors’ Championships in 2024 and 2025.
‘When I started this journey nine years ago, I was clear about the goals I wanted to achieve: to get McLaren back to the front and to win championships. We’ve achieved that goal, but we want more,’ Norris stated after his contract renewal.
The 2025 title was McLaren’s first Drivers’ Championship since 2008. In recognition of his achievements, the team gifted Norris one of the MCL39 chassis he drove during his championship-winning season.
The new contract reportedly places Norris among the highest-paid drivers on the grid, with some estimates suggesting an annual value of over $40 million, potentially rising with bonuses. This financial commitment underscores his value to the team.
In the current 2026 season, Norris has continued to perform, securing one victory and three podiums after eleven rounds. However, he has urged the team to improve the car’s slow-speed performance to mount a consistent challenge for a second consecutive title.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown and Team Principal Andrea Stella have both praised Norris’s talent and commitment, highlighting his central role in the team’s return to the front of the grid. The long-term extension provides stability for both parties.
