George Russell is actively building a ‘toolbox of experience’ to navigate his challenging 2026 Formula 1 season. The Mercedes driver currently trails teammate Kimi Antonelli by 59 points in the Drivers’ Championship after 12 races. Antonelli has secured six Grand Prix victories this season, compared to Russell’s two.

Russell’s 2026 campaign has been marked by inconsistent performance. He secured a dominant victory at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. However, he has since encountered difficulties with the W17 car, attributing some issues to his driving style.

Further setbacks included power unit software problems during the British and Belgian Grand Prix weekends. Russell also retired from the Canadian Grand Prix due to a power unit failure and experienced another issue during qualifying in Hungary.

Following the mid-season break, Russell reported a breakthrough in his driving style and understanding of the car. This shift was evident at the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, where he secured a dominant Sprint race victory and qualified second for the main event.

Russell finished third in the Dutch Grand Prix, with Antonelli taking second place. This result maintained the 59-point gap between the two Mercedes drivers. Russell believes these tough experiences will be valuable for future campaigns.

He acknowledged Antonelli’s strong performance with the 2026 car and tires. Russell stated he is attempting to integrate similar driving techniques into his own approach. He likened this process to adjusting a golf swing, where initial steps back precede improvements.

Mercedes has confirmed that Russell will incur a grid penalty for a new power unit later in the current season. Teammate Antonelli is scheduled to take a new engine at his home Italian Grand Prix, resulting in a back-of-the-grid start.

The team is managing ongoing engine reliability concerns, as both drivers have experienced power unit failures this season. Antonelli’s engine trouble led to his retirement from the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin indicated that the team continuously assesses component performance. Decisions on when to introduce new power units are reviewed after each race weekend.

Deputy team principal Bradley Lord confirmed that both drivers would be affected by penalties. Mercedes aims to avoid penalizing both cars at Monza, considering the circuit’s overtaking opportunities with the new generation of F1 cars.

The W17 car’s basic design has remained stable, with Mercedes not introducing rapid upgrade packages like McLaren and Ferrari. Mercedes’ last significant upgrade was implemented at the Canadian Grand Prix in May.

Russell has identified McLaren as the team to beat for the remainder of the 2026 season. He anticipates Mercedes will be more competitive at Monza, but noted Ferrari is expected to introduce an engine upgrade.

The 2026 season introduced new regulations, including 50-50 hybrid power units requiring strategic energy harvesting. Russell had initially expressed confidence in Mercedes’ adaptation to these rules.
