The Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort is confirmed to exit the Formula 1 calendar following the 2026 season. This decision concludes a six-year return for the event, which rejoined the championship in 2021 after a 36-year absence.

The announcement comes after the Zandvoort promoter opted not to pursue a contract extension beyond 2026. This was despite Formula 1’s expressed interest in retaining the event through the 2028 season.

Event director Robert van Overdijk cited financial risks as the primary reason for the decision. As a privately owned business, the organisers must balance opportunities with responsibilities, relying solely on sponsors and ticket sales without government support.

The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix will serve as the final edition, notably featuring a Sprint format for the first time at Circuit Zandvoort. This marks an emotional conclusion for the event and its dedicated fanbase.

The recent Dutch Grand Prix saw Max Verstappen retire from his home race on the opening lap. Starting from seventh position, Verstappen’s early exit occurred after crashing out at high-speed on the final corner.

A Sky Sports F1 journalist described the impending farewell of Zandvoort as ‘cruel,’ characterising the event as a ‘true Max Verstappen festival.’ This sentiment underscores the strong connection between the Dutch driver and the Grand Prix’s popularity.

The return of the Dutch Grand Prix in 2021 coincided with Max Verstappen’s period of dominance. The event was widely regarded as a ‘monument to one man,’ thriving on the energy of a home hero at the front of the field.

Despite Verstappen’s early retirement in the recent race, the stands at Circuit Zandvoort remained notably full. This indicated a sustained level of fan engagement, even after the local hero’s departure from the competition.

The Dutch Grand Prix had established itself as a leading sustainable sporting event, pioneering technologies now utilised across the Formula 1 calendar. Its unique atmosphere, with an ‘ocean of orange smoke’ from the dunes, became a hallmark.

The decision to conclude the event after 2026 was made while the Grand Prix remains popular. Organisers stated they chose to ‘go out on a high’ rather than risk future losses, given the infrastructure limitations of the coastal resort.
