Jordan criticizes Leclerc after Zandvoort: ‘You are not just here for yourself’

Former team owner Eddie Jordan has directed sharp criticism at Charles Leclerc following the Dutch Grand Prix. Jordan questioned the Ferrari driver’s conduct during a crucial phase of the race at Zandvoort, where team dynamics came under scrutiny.

The comments relate to an incident where Lewis Hamilton, on a faster tyre strategy, was delayed behind his teammate. This hesitation cost Hamilton valuable time in his pursuit of a podium finish, ultimately resulting in a fourth place, one position ahead of Leclerc.

Jordan believes Leclerc prioritized his own race over the optimal team result. He emphasized that drivers have a responsibility to the collective, especially when championship points are critical. The core of his message was a reminder of a driver’s role within the larger team structure.

‘You are not just here for yourself, you’re part of a collective effort to win the constructors’ title.’

The situation at Zandvoort unfolded around lap 41, when Hamilton made it clear over the radio that he had more pace than Leclerc. Despite an initial call to pit, Leclerc questioned the instruction and remained on track, a version of events that has been debated based on team radio transcripts.

This delay allowed rivals to build a gap, neutralizing the strategic advantage Ferrari had created for Hamilton. The seven-time champion expressed his frustration over the radio after the event, calling the situation a ‘great way of wasting time’.

Following the race, both Leclerc and Hamilton questioned the team’s strategy, though from different perspectives. Leclerc stated he felt he could have stayed out longer and did not receive a clear message to swap positions.

The incident has reignited debate over Ferrari’s ability to make decisive strategic calls under pressure. With the team in a tight battle for position in the Constructors’ Championship, maximizing points at every opportunity is essential.

Jordan warned that such moments could create unnecessary friction between the two drivers. He suggested that team principal Frédéric Vasseur must assert clear authority to prevent a recurrence of situations where individual driver decisions compromise the team’s potential.
