George Russell’s performance during the 2026 Formula 1 season has prompted a direct comparison to Valtteri Bottas’s tenure at Mercedes. Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher recently commented on Russell’s current form.
Schumacher stated that Russell’s struggles alongside teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli bear a resemblance to Bottas’s time, where he often played a supporting role. Schumacher believes Antonelli is now the undisputed number-one driver.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who joined Mercedes for the 2025 season, has established himself as a frontrunner in 2026. He currently leads the Drivers’ Championship with 242 points.
Antonelli has secured six Grand Prix victories and 13 podium finishes this season. He dominated the initial six rounds, accumulating 156 points during that period.
Russell, by contrast, holds second place in the championship standings with 183 points, trailing Antonelli by 59 points. He has achieved two wins and five podiums this year.
Russell won the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and the Austrian Grand Prix in June. However, he has faced scrutiny for inconsistent results throughout the season.
In the recent Dutch Grand Prix on August 23, Russell finished third after winning the Sprint race. Mercedes requested him to allow Antonelli to pass during the main race.
Russell accepted the team order, acknowledging it as the ‘right decision’ despite his personal frustration. This incident further highlighted the dynamic within the team.
Valtteri Bottas competed for Mercedes from 2017 to 2021, securing 10 Grand Prix victories and 67 podium finishes. He was often perceived as a clear number two driver to Lewis Hamilton.
Bottas’s role was frequently to support Hamilton’s championship bids. The comparison suggests Russell may be experiencing a similar dynamic with Antonelli’s strong emergence.
