Former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers has indicated that Max Verstappen could be a surprise contender for victory at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. Albers conveyed his assessment on De Telegraaf’s podcast, despite Red Bull’s recent performance at Zandvoort.
The Italian Grand Prix is scheduled to take place from September 4 to 6, 2026, marking the 15th race of the current Formula 1 season. Monza, known as the ‘Temple of Speed,’ is recognized as the fastest circuit on the F1 calendar, with cars averaging over 260 km/h per lap.
Albers highlighted that the Autodromo Nazionale Monza’s characteristics, featuring long straights and slow corners, should suit the Red Bull RB22. He noted the team’s proficiency with low-drag setups, suggesting a competitive package for the high-speed sections of the track.
Red Bull experienced a challenging Dutch Grand Prix weekend, which concluded on August 23, 2026. Max Verstappen retired on the opening lap at Zandvoort after losing control of his car on a damp surface.
Team Principal Laurent Mekies acknowledged that the Zandvoort event was a ‘very tough weekend’ for Red Bull, indicating a ‘step backwards’ in performance compared to the period before the summer break. Verstappen also confirmed he had been battling an illness throughout the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.
Despite the recent setback, Red Bull Powertrains (RBPT), in collaboration with Ford, developed the 2026 power unit. The FIA provisionally identified RBPT’s engine as the benchmark in June 2026, noting it was more than 2% ahead of other manufacturers in internal combustion engine performance.
This initial assessment under the Additional Development and Update Opportunities (ADUO) system meant Red Bull was not granted extra development time. However, a second ADUO review is anticipated before the Italian Grand Prix.
Should Red Bull be deemed more than 2% behind any rival in the upcoming review, it could open opportunities for engine upgrades. Currently, Red Bull is often considered the third or fourth fastest car on most circuits.
Max Verstappen has previously voiced concerns regarding the 2026 regulations, describing the cars as ‘not so fun’ and emphasizing the increased reliance on engine power. He specifically mentioned that circuits like Spa and Monza would likely present similar challenges with the current car generation.
Red Bull’s strategy for the 2026 season has placed a strong emphasis on aerodynamic efficiency. The team is focusing on a refined upgrade path for the RB22, with development centered around Verstappen’s driving feedback.
Verstappen has a history of strong performances at Monza, securing victories in 2025, 2023, and 2022. The 2025 Italian Grand Prix, won by Verstappen, was recorded as the fastest F1 Grand Prix in history.
The competition at Monza is expected to be significant, with Mercedes currently leading the Constructors’ Championship. Ferrari is also set to introduce a 15 hp engine upgrade at the Italian Grand Prix.
