Kimi Antonelli is scheduled to receive a grid penalty at the upcoming Italian Grand Prix in Monza. Mercedes has confirmed a full engine change for the championship leader. Discussions are currently ongoing regarding where teammate George Russell will take his own engine penalty later in the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff stated the decision to penalise Antonelli at Monza was strategic. Simulations indicate the circuit offers the best overtaking opportunities on the calendar. Wolff emphasised that championship points take precedence over public relations, and algorithms do not factor in a driver’s nationality.

Antonelli currently holds a 59-point lead over Russell in the drivers’ standings. The penalty at his home race will present a significant challenge to his championship campaign. Mercedes aims to minimise the impact by choosing a track conducive to recovery drives.

Both Mercedes drivers have incurred engine-related retirements earlier this season, contributing to the need for new power unit components. Mercedes-powered teams, including McLaren, Williams, and Alpine, faced significant reliability challenges in the first half of the 2026 season.

Antonelli retired from the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona due to an electrical shutdown originating from a battery failure. Russell’s Canadian Grand Prix ended prematurely while he was leading, caused by heat damage to his battery.

The 2026 Formula 1 season introduced all-new power unit regulations, marking the most substantial engine overhaul in over a decade. Drivers are permitted four Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) and Turbochargers, three MGU-Ks, Energy Stores, and Control Electronics.

Additionally, four exhaust sets are allowed per driver for the season. Due to the new regulations, one of each component allocation is considered a ‘bonus’ for 2026. Exceeding these limits results in grid penalties.

The first instance of exceeding a component allocation incurs a 10-place grid penalty. Subsequent violations result in a five-place grid drop. A cumulative penalty exceeding 15 grid places mandates a back-of-the-field start.

Mercedes High Performance Powertrains (HPP) at Brixworth has been working to address the early-season reliability issues. Deputy Technical Director Simone Resta acknowledged the difficult start but noted progress in eliminating weaknesses.

Toto Wolff estimates that Mercedes has lost between 50 and 100 points this season due to reliability problems. These issues have also impacted the team’s financial resources allocated for chassis development.

The 2026 power units feature a 50:50 internal combustion to electronic power split, a significant increase from previous seasons. The MGU-K’s maximum electrical output has dramatically increased to 350 kW, and energy recovery is nearly doubled to 8.5 MJ per lap.

The complex MGU-H component has been removed from the power unit architecture for 2026. Furthermore, fuel flow to the engine has been reduced to approximately 75kg per hour as part of sustainability efforts.
