Max Verstappen retired from the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday after a first-lap incident at Circuit Zandvoort. The Red Bull driver crashed out just 72 seconds into his home race, bringing out a red flag.

Verstappen lost control of his car coming out of the final corner, dipping a wheel across the white line before hitting the wall. He confirmed he was unhurt following the heavy impact.

The early exit for the four-time world champion occurred days after reports emerged regarding a significant contract extension with Red Bull Racing. International media outlets detailed a new deal for Verstappen until the end of the 2030 season.

F1 finance expert Marc Limacher reported on August 21 that Verstappen’s new base salary is set to be €92 million annually from 2027. Performance-related bonuses could increase his yearly earnings to €115 million.

This potential package, valued at €460 million over four years, positions Verstappen as one of the highest-paid athletes globally. Red Bull and Verstappen have not officially confirmed these financial figures.

The incident at Zandvoort marks a challenging period for Verstappen and Red Bull in the 2026 Formula 1 season. The team has faced difficulties adapting to the new technical regulations.

Verstappen currently sits sixth in the drivers’ standings and has yet to secure a Grand Prix victory this year. He achieved a third-place finish at the Belgian Grand Prix on July 19.

A week later, on July 26, he secured second place at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Verstappen described the race as one of the season’s most demanding due to persistent car balance issues.

The Dutchman has been vocal about the 2026 regulations, particularly the 50-50 split between the internal combustion engine and electrical deployment. He believes this shift diminishes driver skill by prioritizing energy management over high-speed performance.

Red Bull has been working to address the handling balance of the RB22, which Verstappen has identified as a primary concern throughout the current season.
