Max Verstappen exited the Dutch Grand Prix on the opening lap following a significant crash at Circuit Zandvoort. The incident occurred in damp conditions, leading to an immediate red flag and suspending the race. Verstappen, starting from seventh position, lost control of his Red Bull car.

The four-time world champion veered into the concrete barriers at the final corner, known as the Luyendyk corner. His car sustained substantial damage before sliding back across the track. Verstappen confirmed he was uninjured over team radio and exited the cockpit unaided.

International media outlets reacted to the severity of the crash, with many describing it as a ‘terrible incident’ and a ‘wonder’ that Verstappen escaped without serious injury. Belgian publication HLN termed it a ‘horrorscenario’ for the home favourite.

Former Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg analysed the incident, attributing it to a driver error. Rosberg noted Verstappen took a tighter line on the damp track and applied too much throttle. Verstappen himself acknowledged it was his mistake, citing a tight corner entry on the wet surface.

The circuit conditions were challenging, with a heavy downpour approximately 45 minutes before the start. Although the track had dried sufficiently for slick tyres, damp patches persisted, particularly in the final corners. Other drivers, including Gabriel Bortoleto, narrowly avoided further collisions.

This event marks the final Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort for the foreseeable future. Organisers opted not to extend their contract with Formula 1 beyond the 2026 season, citing financial risks and a lack of government support. Verstappen had previously won three editions of the revived race.

Verstappen had been battling a flu-like illness throughout the race weekend. He confirmed his condition had improved on Sunday but still felt unwell. Despite this, he maintained the illness was not impacting his performance behind the wheel.

Following the red flag, the race was suspended. Stewards later issued drive-through penalties to Franco Colapinto and Arvid Lindblad for yellow flag infringements in the aftermath of Verstappen’s crash.

Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali commented on the Zandvoort departure, expressing gratitude for the circuit’s contribution. Domenicali also welcomed Verstappen’s recent contract extension with Red Bull, securing his presence until the end of the 2030 season.

Lando Norris started the race from pole position, with Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader, lining up third. George Russell, who won Saturday’s sprint race, began from second on the grid.
