George Russell secured victory in the Dutch Grand Prix sprint race at Circuit Zandvoort on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The Mercedes driver led the 100km event from pole position.

Russell acknowledged the narrow margin of his win, stating that an additional lap could have altered the outcome significantly. He expressed satisfaction with the timing of the rain, which arrived almost immediately after he crossed the finish line.

‘If there had been one more lap, the race could have looked very different, so I was glad the rain came when it came.’

Charles Leclerc, driving for Ferrari, finished second after an aggressive tyre strategy. Leclerc was one of only two drivers to start the sprint on the softer C4 compound, while the majority of the field opted for medium C3 tyres.

Leclerc’s gamble paid off, as he demonstrated strong pace in the upgraded Ferrari SF-26, particularly in Zandvoort’s fast corners. He passed Lando Norris on Lap 18 to secure second place.

Russell managed his tyres effectively during the sprint, conserving energy for the latter phase of the race. He noted he was unaware of Leclerc’s soft tyre choice during the race.

The top three finishers in the Dutch GP sprint race were George Russell for Mercedes, Charles Leclerc for Ferrari, and Lando Norris for McLaren.

Kimi Antonelli finished fourth for Mercedes, followed by Oscar Piastri in fifth for McLaren. Max Verstappen secured sixth place for Red Bull, with Lewis Hamilton taking seventh for Ferrari.

Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi), and Arvid Lindblad (Racing Bulls) completed the top ten, earning championship points.

The sprint race format for 2026 includes a 100km distance with no mandatory pit stops, awarding points to the top eight finishers on an 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 scale.

Qualifying for Sunday’s main Grand Prix is scheduled for later today. Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren are expected to be separated by fine margins in the fight for pole position.

Russell’s sprint pole position provided relief for Mercedes, who have been holding back on major upgrade packages. Ferrari’s SF-26 showed promising race pace in free practice.
