Gabriel Bortoleto has expressed his admiration for Max Verstappen’s recent contract extension with Red Bull, indicating a desire to forge a similarly long-term career with Audi. Verstappen’s new agreement secures his position with the Milton Keynes squad until the conclusion of the 2030 season.
The Brazilian driver stated that a prolonged partnership within a single Formula 1 team structure would signify immense project success. Bortoleto views Verstappen’s commitment as a positive development for the sport, emphasizing the importance of top-tier talent remaining in the championship.
Verstappen’s contract renewal was announced on Thursday, August 20, 2026, ahead of his home Dutch Grand Prix. This decision concluded nearly 18 months of speculation regarding his future in Formula 1.
The four-time world champion had previously indicated he considered leaving the sport due to dissatisfaction with the 2026 technical regulations. Verstappen cited concerns over the cars’ reliance on electrical power, comparing the experience to ‘Formula E on steroids.’
Despite these reservations, discussions with Formula 1 and the FIA reportedly convinced Verstappen that improvements to the current car regulations are underway. His new contract could also potentially encompass a return to simpler V8 engines, a prospect that influenced his decision.
Bortoleto, currently an Audi F1 driver, is contracted on a multi-year deal that extends beyond the 2026 season. He joined Sauber in 2025 before its transition to the Audi factory team this year, partnering Nico Hülkenberg.
The relationship between Bortoleto and Verstappen extends beyond professional admiration. Bortoleto considers Verstappen a close friend and mentor, having received significant career advice, including guidance on contract negotiations during his junior formula years.
‘He’s just a guy that does a lot for you, expecting nothing [in return], and these types of people are special people, and I’m going to be extremely grateful for the rest of my life,’ Bortoleto stated.
Bortoleto has also publicly defended top drivers against claims that the 2026 regulations are hindering their performance. He maintains that adapting to different car characteristics is a fundamental aspect of a Formula 1 driver’s skill set.
The Dutch Grand Prix weekend is currently underway, with Verstappen having secured the sixth fastest time during sprint qualifying. The contract announcement provided a significant talking point leading into the event at Circuit Zandvoort.
