Max Verstappen has signed a new contract with Red Bull Racing, committing his future to the team until the end of the 2030 Formula 1 season. The announcement, made on August 20, 2026, concludes nearly 18 months of intense speculation regarding the four-time world champion’s career path.

Verstappen’s previous agreement was set to expire at the close of 2028, but it contained performance-based clauses that could have allowed an earlier departure. His future had been a subject of considerable debate, with links to Mercedes and McLaren emerging.

Laurent Mekies, Team Principal of Red Bull Racing, described the news as ‘phenomenal’ for the team, Formula 1, and motorsport globally. He highlighted it as a significant demonstration of trust from Verstappen in the team’s vision and culture.

Mekies acknowledged the substantial responsibility now resting on Red Bull to provide a competitive car. The team has faced challenges with the 2026 regulations, currently sitting fourth in the constructors’ standings without a victory this season.

The stability brought by Verstappen’s long-term commitment extends to the wider Red Bull motorsport family, including sister team Racing Bulls. Both Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls utilise the Red Bull Ford Powertrains unit, which debuted in 2026.

Verstappen himself expressed confidence in the team, stating he never felt the desire to move elsewhere. He emphasised feeling at home within the Red Bull structure and aiming to conclude his career with the outfit.

The 28-year-old driver had previously intimated he was closer to considering retirement from F1 than switching teams, citing dissatisfaction with the new technical regulations. However, ongoing discussions led to this extended agreement.

Red Bull Powertrains launched its DM01 power unit on January 15, 2026, named in honour of the late Red Bull GmbH founder Dietrich Mateschitz. The power unit is supplied to both Red Bull-owned teams.

The current 2026 season has seen Red Bull Racing introduce 36 changes and upgrades at every Grand Prix except the Chinese event. However, development pace may slow due to the spending cap and focus on the 2027 car.

This new contract could establish Verstappen’s tenure as the longest driver-team partnership in Formula 1 history. His commitment ensures a central figure for Red Bull’s future competitive cycles.
