Max Verstappen has committed his long-term future to Red Bull Racing, signing a contract extension that will keep him with the team until the conclusion of the 2030 Formula 1 season. The announcement was made on Thursday, August 20, 2026, ending months of speculation regarding the four-time world champion’s position.

Verstappen’s previous agreement with Red Bull was set to expire at the end of 2028. This new deal effectively adds two more years to his tenure, quashing rumours that had linked him with potential moves to rival teams, notably McLaren and Mercedes.

The Dutchman expressed his satisfaction with the extension, highlighting his strong connection to the team. Verstappen stated, ‘I am really pleased with the contract extension. We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again.’

He further elaborated on his comfort within the Red Bull environment, describing the team as a ‘second family.’ Verstappen had previously voiced concerns over the 2026 technical regulations, even considering retirement, but constructive discussions with F1 and the FIA, alongside car adjustments, influenced his decision to remain.

Meanwhile, George Russell’s contractual status with Mercedes for the 2026 season was confirmed much earlier, on October 15, 2025. He is set to continue alongside Kimi Antonelli, forming Mercedes’ driver lineup for the current year.

While the initial announcement specified Russell’s commitment for 2026, subsequent reports indicated a multi-year arrangement. This deal includes performance-related clauses that could automatically extend his stay into the 2027 season based on his results this year.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff addressed the timing of Russell’s contract confirmation last year, stating that the delay was to ensure all parties were content with the terms. Russell himself confirmed that his 2027 seat is contingent on his performance throughout 2026.

The definitive commitment of Verstappen to Red Bull now closes a chapter of driver market speculation that had seen Mercedes linked with the Dutch driver. This solidifies the top teams’ driver lineups for the immediate future.
