Max Verstappen has formally committed his future to Red Bull Racing, signing a new contract that will see him remain with the team until the conclusion of the 2030 Formula 1 season. The announcement, made on Thursday, August 20, 2026, definitively ends widespread speculation regarding his potential departure from the Milton Keynes outfit.

Verstappen’s previous agreement was set to expire at the end of 2028, but it contained performance-based clauses that fueled rumours of a possible move. McLaren and Mercedes were among the teams linked with the four-time world champion, particularly as Red Bull has faced challenges under the current 2026 technical regulations.

Speaking at the Dutch Grand Prix, Verstappen indicated he was closer to considering retirement from Formula 1 than switching teams. He expressed confidence in Red Bull’s direction under Team Principal Laurent Mekies, despite the team’s current performance struggles.

Concurrently, Oscar Piastri’s position at McLaren remains secure. The Australian driver holds a multi-year contract extension with the Woking-based team, confirmed to run until at least the end of the 2026 season, with some reports indicating a deal through 2028. Piastri has also publicly affirmed his commitment to McLaren for the 2027 season.

Recent reports in July 2026 suggested that Verstappen’s management had engaged in informal discussions to explore opportunities at McLaren. These discussions followed earlier speculation about a direct driver swap involving Piastri.

Mark Webber, Piastri’s manager since 2019, had previously addressed these rumours, dismissing them as ‘fiction’. Webber maintained that Piastri is contracted to McLaren for the foreseeable future and is not seeking to leave the team.

McLaren’s leadership also downplayed the speculation. Team Principal Andrea Stella publicly rejected the notion of a direct swap, and CEO Zak Brown referred to the reports as mere ‘rumours’.

Earlier this year, in February 2026, it was reported that Webber would reduce his trackside presence during the current season. His focus has shifted more towards the commercial aspects of Piastri’s career.

Verstappen’s new long-term commitment to Red Bull effectively closes the door on any immediate driver market movements involving him. This outcome solidifies the current driver lineups at both Red Bull and McLaren for the upcoming seasons.
