Max Verstappen has formally extended his contract with Red Bull Racing, committing to the team until the conclusion of the 2030 Formula 1 season. The announcement was made on Thursday, August 20, 2026, ahead of his home race, the Dutch Grand Prix. This new agreement supersedes his previous contract, which was set to expire at the end of 2028.
The extension brings an end to significant speculation surrounding Verstappen’s future, particularly after Red Bull’s performance challenges under the new 2026 technical regulations. Mercedes has emerged with a dominant car this season, placing Verstappen sixth in the Drivers’ Championship, 110 points behind leader Kimi Antonelli.
Verstappen’s previous deal included performance-based exit clauses, which fueled rumours of a potential move to rival teams such as Mercedes or McLaren. His father, Jos Verstappen, confirmed that the updated contract retains similar performance-related ‘agreements,’ though the specific details remain confidential.
‘Naturally, agreements were made regarding this in the contract. We know what those agreements are, Red Bull knows, and we are not going to disclose them,’ Jos Verstappen stated.
Despite the team’s current struggles, Verstappen expressed confidence in Red Bull’s long-term project and its leadership. He cited a desire to finish his Formula 1 career with the Milton Keynes-based outfit, a sentiment he has held for some time.
The four-time world champion also noted that Red Bull’s flexibility in allowing him to participate in other racing categories outside of Formula 1 was a significant factor in his decision. This comprehensive package contributed to his commitment.
Team Principal Laurent Mekies, who assumed the role in July 2025, has overseen a rebuilding phase for Red Bull. The extension of Verstappen’s contract is considered a major achievement during his tenure, providing crucial stability.
Red Bull’s power unit, in its inaugural year as a manufacturer, has been benchmarked by the FIA’s ADUO system as the best on the grid. This technical strength offers a promising outlook despite the current car’s performance.
The team has also seen recent positive results, securing three podium finishes in the last four races. This upward trajectory likely reinforced Verstappen’s belief in the team’s ability to return to winning ways.
Verstappen had previously hinted at a potential retirement from Formula 1 due to dissatisfaction with the new regulations, stating he was ‘closer to retiring than changing team.’ His decision to extend signifies renewed faith in the sport and his team.
The contract extension solidifies Red Bull’s driver lineup for the foreseeable future and impacts the broader driver market for the 2027 season and beyond. It ensures a key figure remains with the team.
The announcement coincides with the build-up to the Dutch Grand Prix, the twelfth round of the 2026 Formula 1 season, which commences on August 21, 2026.
