Aston Martin F1 has confirmed a new investment, with American billionaire Robert Wood Johnson acquiring a significant minority stake in the team. This development was announced on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
Johnson, widely known as Woody Johnson, is the owner of the NFL’s New York Jets. He previously served as the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 2017 to 2021.
He will immediately join the Aston Martin board of directors as vice-chairman. However, Johnson will not assume any day-to-day operational responsibilities within the Silverstone-based outfit.
The exact financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Industry speculation suggests Johnson’s stake could be around 15%, with the team’s valuation now at approximately $3.5 billion.
This investment is strategically aimed at accelerating Aston Martin’s commercial growth, particularly within the expanding United States market. Formula 1 currently features three American races.
Johnson’s extensive portfolio of sports interests, including his ownership of the New York Jets and a 43% stake in Crystal Palace, is expected to open new commercial opportunities.
Lawrence Stroll remains the executive chairman and controlling shareholder of the Aston Martin Aramco Formula 1 Team. His Yew Tree consortium holds a majority stake of approximately 33%.
Stroll stated his pleasure in welcoming Johnson, highlighting his experience and passion as strengthening the team’s position for its competitive journey.
‘I am extremely happy to welcome Woody to the Aston Martin family. His experience, passion and investment further strengthen our position as we enter the next phase of our competitive journey,’ Stroll commented.
Johnson is an heir to the Johnson & Johnson family fortune. His net worth was estimated at $3.4 billion by Forbes in March 2026.
This financial strengthening supports Aston Martin’s long-term ambitions, including its new Silverstone campus and the team’s partnership with Honda as a works power unit supplier for 2026.
