Pierre Gasly has commented on Max Verstappen’s recently announced contract extension with Red Bull Racing, specifically acknowledging the work of Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen. The Alpine driver suggested Vermeulen was instrumental in securing a substantial financial agreement for the four-time world champion.
Verstappen’s new deal commits him to the Milton Keynes-based outfit until the conclusion of the 2030 Formula 1 season. This extension brings an end to months of speculation regarding his future in the sport.
His previous contract was scheduled to run until the end of 2028 and reportedly contained performance-related clauses that could have allowed an earlier departure. Verstappen had been linked with potential moves to Mercedes and McLaren.
The 2026 season has seen Red Bull struggle with the current technical regulations, failing to secure a victory thus far. Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari have demonstrated stronger performance during the current campaign.
Gasly, a former teammate of Verstappen, expressed no surprise at the contract extension. He offered a direct assessment of the negotiation process.
‘I think a very good job from his manager and nice pay rise,’ Gasly stated.
The Frenchman views Verstappen’s continued presence on the Formula 1 grid as a positive development for the sport. He considers Verstappen to be among the best drivers of his generation.
Gasly also noted the unique nature of Verstappen’s long-term commitment to a single team. He drew a contrast with Lewis Hamilton’s current position at Ferrari, highlighting the rarity of such extended partnerships in modern Formula 1.
Verstappen himself conveyed satisfaction with the new agreement, describing Red Bull as ‘a second family’. He reiterated the team’s collective objective to return to championship-winning form.
Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, also welcomed the contract extension, stating it restored calm regarding his son’s future. He credited Raymond Vermeulen and Red Bull’s Oliver Mintzlaff for their efforts in the negotiations.
Financially, Verstappen is recognised as one of the highest-paid athletes globally. Forbes previously estimated his total annual earnings at $86 million, with $78 million from on-field activities.
The announcement of the contract extension was made ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix. Negotiations for the new deal reportedly took place during the recent summer break.
