Max Verstappen has committed his future to Red Bull Racing, signing a new contract that extends his tenure with the team until the end of the 2030 Formula 1 season. This announcement was made on the eve of the Dutch Grand Prix.

The four-time world champion revealed he had considered retiring from the sport rather than moving to a rival team. This statement follows months of speculation regarding his long-term future in Formula 1.

Verstappen’s previous contract with Red Bull was set to conclude at the end of the 2028 season. That agreement reportedly included performance-related exit clauses.

The new deal represents a significant extension, solidifying his commitment to the Milton Keynes-based outfit for an additional two years beyond his prior terms.

Verstappen explicitly stated, ‘I was closer to retiring than changing teams.’ He expressed his satisfaction with his current environment at Red Bull.

His comments come amidst a challenging 2026 season for Red Bull, where the team has struggled under the new technical regulations. Verstappen is currently positioned sixth in the drivers’ championship standings.

The Dutchman has been a vocal critic of the 2026 regulations, particularly regarding the increased emphasis on energy management. He indicated these rules have impacted his enjoyment of racing.

Verstappen has consistently highlighted his strong bond with Red Bull, describing the team as ‘a second family’ for him. He has often expressed a desire to conclude his career with a single team.

This contract extension effectively ends persistent rumours linking Verstappen to other top teams, including Mercedes and McLaren, for future seasons.

He also confirmed holding positive discussions with both Formula 1 management and the FIA. These talks have contributed to a more optimistic outlook on the sport’s future direction.

Laurent Mekies, who assumed the role of Team Principal in July 2025, has overseen a rebuilding phase for Red Bull. Verstappen conveyed confidence in Mekies’ vision for the team.

Red Bull Racing affirmed their pride in the extended partnership, calling it one of the most successful and defining collaborations in Formula 1 history.

I am really pleased with the contract extension. We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again.

The team remains focused on providing a competitive car and continuing their successful trajectory with Verstappen at the forefront.
