George Russell has revealed he still has physical scars from his remarkable Mercedes debut at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix. The British driver was called up from Williams at short notice to replace Lewis Hamilton, who had tested positive for COVID-19.

The opportunity required significant physical compromise. Russell, who is considerably taller than Hamilton, had to squeeze into a cockpit not designed for his frame. This led to lasting physical marks. “I’ve still got the scars on my hips,” Russell stated in a recent interview.

The discomfort was not limited to the seating position. Russell also had to wear race boots two sizes smaller than his usual size to operate the pedals correctly. “I’m a size 45… and I had to wear size 43 shoes to fit in,” he explained.

Despite the physical challenges, Russell was determined to drive. He recalled telling the team he was fine when asked about his comfort. “I was like, ‘Yeah, totally fine. No issues… I’m driving, no matter what, I am driving this weekend’,” he said.

The race itself was a dramatic affair. After qualifying second, Russell overtook teammate Valtteri Bottas at the start and led for 59 laps. He appeared to be on course for a sensational maiden victory in his first race for the works team.

However, his chances were undone by two separate incidents. A pit stop mix-up during a Safety Car period saw his car incorrectly fitted with Bottas’s front tyres, forcing another stop. The team later attributed this to a radio communications failure.

After fighting his way back through the field to second place, a late-race puncture forced yet another pit stop, ultimately dropping him to ninth position at the chequered flag. Despite the result, he secured his first-ever Formula 1 points.

Reflecting on the event nearly six years later, Russell believes the performance was pivotal for his career. He felt that what he demonstrated during that race was enough to secure his future with Mercedes, a move that was officially made in 2022.

“I was on course to win the race and then it all got taken away,” Russell said. “It was really tough, but I also knew what I showed in that race was enough that that would probably seal my future with this team.”
