Ralf Schumacher maintains that Max Verstappen remains the premier talent in Formula 1, despite the current challenges faced by Red Bull Racing. Schumacher’s assessment comes as the sport prepares for the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort. The event, scheduled for August 21-23, 2026, marks the twelfth round of the current Formula One World Championship season.

Verstappen has voiced significant dissatisfaction with the 2026 technical regulations, describing the racing as ‘a joke’ and akin to ‘Mario Kart.’ He contends that the current rules restrict a driver’s ability to influence race outcomes.

The four-time world champion is currently positioned sixth in the Drivers’ Championship standings, having yet to secure a victory this season. His frustrations stem from the car’s performance and the demands of energy management under the new power unit framework.

Amid these performance concerns, Verstappen’s future at Red Bull remains a subject of intense speculation. His contract, which runs until 2028, includes an exit clause that became active after he fell outside the top two in the championship by the season’s halfway point.

Red Bull has reportedly offered Verstappen a revised five-year contract, extending his tenure until 2033, with an increased salary and the removal of the exit clause. However, reports indicate Verstappen prefers a shorter commitment and wishes to retain the performance-related exit option.

An €8 million offer from Red Bull to buy out the existing exit clause was reportedly rejected by Verstappen’s management. This ongoing contractual uncertainty adds to the team’s operational complexities.

Personnel changes are also underway at Red Bull. Gianpiero Lambiase, Verstappen’s long-standing race engineer, is set to depart for McLaren no later than 2028. Tom McCullough has been identified as Lambiase’s successor in a senior trackside role.

Tom Hart is expected to assume the role of Verstappen’s race engineer, potentially deputizing during the current season and taking over permanently in 2027. Red Bull has also secured Gwen Lagrue from Mercedes to lead its junior driver program from 2027.

Looking ahead, Formula 1 is implementing phased changes to power unit regulations for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. These adjustments aim to reduce the reliance on electrical power.

The internal combustion engine’s maximum power will increase to 420kW in 2027 and 450kW in 2028, up from the current 400kW. Concurrently, the electric motor’s power will decrease from 350kW to 300kW starting in 2027.

This rebalancing will shift the power split from the current 53/47 (ICE/MGU-K) to approximately 58/42 in 2027 and 60/40 in 2028. The FIA’s objective is to address energy management issues and facilitate more sustained ‘flat-out’ qualifying laps.

Further into the future, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has expressed intentions for a return to V8 engines with a reduced electrical component by 2030 or 2031. This move would signify the end of the turbo-hybrid era.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has indicated support for a V8 comeback, citing a preference for a simpler, more visceral engine sound. A 2030 change would require the agreement of at least four of the six current engine manufacturers.

The upcoming Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort will be the final event held under the current promoter’s agreement, as the venue will not host Formula 1 beyond 2026. Weekend tickets for Saturday and Sunday are already sold out.
