Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, currently leading the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, is set to incur a power unit penalty in upcoming races. This development follows the installation of his fifth internal combustion engine (ICE) of the season, exceeding the regulatory allowance.

The penalty is anticipated to be applied at the Belgian Grand Prix, a circuit known for its overtaking opportunities. However, starting further down the grid will present a significant challenge to Antonelli’s championship aspirations.

Former IndyCar driver and F1 analyst James Hinchcliffe has voiced his surprise regarding the reported level of access Andrea Antonelli, Kimi’s father, appears to have within the Mercedes garage. Hinchcliffe questioned the precedent this involvement might establish for team operations.

Andrea Antonelli, a notable figure in Italian motorsport, has been frequently observed in the Mercedes pit area and hospitality suite during recent Grand Prix weekends. His consistent presence has been documented by various media outlets.

The FIA regulations for the 2026 season strictly permit a maximum of four ICE units per driver for the entire championship. Any additional unit automatically triggers a grid penalty, typically a ten-place drop for the first new component.

This power unit change for Antonelli follows a series of strong performances earlier this season. He secured victories at both the Spanish and Austrian Grands Prix, which contributed to solidifying his current championship lead.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team has not issued an official statement directly addressing Andrea Antonelli’s specific involvement. However, internal team sources suggest his presence is primarily in a supportive, personal capacity for his son.

Mercedes has acknowledged ongoing reliability concerns with their 2026 power unit, particularly regarding the internal combustion engine component. Team Principal Toto Wolff has indicated that efforts are underway to resolve these issues.
